The
National Survey File provides township/range and section
polygons for 32 states as surveyed from 1797 to the
present, with districts/boroughs for 10 East Coast
states and block/section/abstract polygons for Texas.
Based on the U.S.G.S. 7.5-minute topographic quadrangles
(15 minute where 7.5 minute is not available), the
file is derived from a latitude/longitude-based system
of known geodetic accuracy.
The use of recently
compiled orthophotography in Texas and South Louisiana
provide an even higher level of accuracy where the
survey is more complex, and where oil and gas drilling
activity is high. The geodetically-precise orthophotos
were created by using the horizontal and vertical
control from the U.S.G.S. 7.5-minute topographic quadrangles.
The mapping in these areas incorporates the most current
data available from public and selected private sources.
Where the most accurate and up-to-date information
is needed, the orthophoto-based data is essential.
